Not all incidents are displayed on our map. There may be insufficient or conflicting information preventing us to position the incident accurately on the map. Also, the location may fall outside the map.

It is always a good idea to check the complete list of incidents that accompanies each regional traffic map.

Speed/Congestion Legend: Caltrans operates a number of sensors measuring real-time speed and congestion information on major Bay Area Highways.

In addition to speed in miles per hour, sensors may provide a measure of volume of traffic. We visualize the speed and congestion data as follows:

Automated Data Qualification: Our patent-pending process peridically reviews all the data we publish and determines whether the data may have been outdated.

Authoritative studies have shown (see Washington DOT, May 2000) that even the most respected, sophisticated, and expensive traffic information servers exhibit lapses of time when the information becomes outdated or unavailable.

If we were simply pulling data and publishing it as is (as most competitors do) we would periodically relay outdated data, or leave outdated information published on the present server.

Instead, when our algorithms and software spot an significant issue with the data, we decide to not publish the suspicious data. This is why you may infrequently see the speed/congestion information missing as it becomes outdated. As soon as the up-to-date flow of data is restored the green, orange and red dots will re-appear.
